Active Park has been closed for the past week. It seems the local residents have been complaining about the noise emanating from the skatepark. We have been informed that signs were put up asking skateboarders not to skate late into the night. We spoke with Nee Soon South Community Club today and they told us a cage is being installed that will prevent skateboarders entering at night. It will be locked with a pad lock. We were able to raise $470 at the Active Skateboarding Competition last weekend. We have donated the money to the Singapore Red Cross to assist survivors of the Japan Disaster 2011. Thank you to all the skateboarders and sponsors that took part in the event!

Here is some of the cool gear SkullCandy is giving us for the Active Park Skateboarding Competition. We have thrown in some LCS decks and Playpoint has dropped some cash. All skateboarders that make it to the podium will also receive Bones STF Wheels from Spitfire skateshop.
We also have to give a big shout out to VitaminWater for providing the athletes with the best tasting water known to man. Available in 6 flavours we are sure you will fall in love with one or all of them!
We are happy to report that we are working with Nee Soon South Community Club and Playpoint to improve the layout and ramps at Active Skatepark. The double pipe rail has just been installed on the funbox and we expect it will see lots of action during Sunday's competition. Over the next month or two we hope to add a manual pad and lower the height of the pyramid. We are trying to get a pyramid/funbox similar to Queenstown skatepark.

Here are some photos of the new Yishun skatepark that is under construction. The park is located at block 832 Yishun street 81 and is part of a redevelopment project. Along with a skatepark, a fitness corner and petanque court are being built. The Street Soccer court is also being redeveloped and a junior practice court (skating) is being added. The project was commissioned by Yishun -Yio Chu Kang Town Council
This funbox will have a rail added to the center. We presume this will be one of the more utilized obstacles but unfortunately, the designer has positioned the quarter pipes and banks incorrectly.The larger quarter pipe needed to gain speed and momentum to approach the funbox has been positioned in a far away corner. Therefore, there is no run up from either side to approach this obstacle with sufficient speed. Either side of the funbox is the pyramid and a bank. Have a look at the second picture above and see what we mean!
Here is a good angle showing the almost "un-skateable" pyramid and the funbox with no quarter pipe to gain speed. This park also really needs 2 grind box's minimum.
The Yishun -Yio Chu Kang Town Council and Playpoint have not consulted any local skateboarders in the design, layout and choice of the ramps. As a result what could have been an amazing facility has now become a poor representation of what skateboarders in Singapore want and need.
In the future an effort should be made to create a dialogue between users of these skateparks, the town councils and builders. With local skateboarder input and involvement when building or renovating heartland skateparks these citizens will develop a sense of ownership and pride. Furthremore, when town councils provide the "correct" facilities it helps the youth feel that the community is addressing their needs and helps them feel more connected and encourages good citizenship.
