Looking Back at Skateboarding

Posted by fleas

Natas Kaupas part from the 1989 Santa Cruz Streets On Fire video.

Appreciating how far skateboarding has come from fishboards to the current concave boards you see today.

Starting in the early 1950s, skateboarding was initally thought up by Californian surfers as a way to surf the streets. No one really knows who invented the first skateboard but it remains a beautiful strange spontaneous creation.

Starting off as wooden boxes / wood planks with rollerskate wheels at the bottom, soon companies found interest in developing proper skateboards with pressed layers of wood similar to the current boards we know. At that time, skateboards were mainly used to surf/cruise the streets.

As skateboarding grew, different styles emerged including  freestyle, vert, street (trick skating), and cruising (long boarding). Various skate companies slowly developed better equipment and various apparels based on skateboarding.

Skateboarding has grown from a sport into a culture, lifestyle and industry.
